The Zero Waste Program has begun
The main message of HuMuSz is that it's best if we don't produce waste at all, but at least we must do everything to reach this state. In the Zero Waste Program HuMuSz streamlines such practical advice, examples and info which, if followed, only require small changes in our everyday lives, yet contribute significantly to the protection of the environment and our health. In our proposal we put emphasis on community building elements, which in our opinion is essential to working together towards a common goal. We started a separate program to organize NGOs into a zero waste network. An important element of the Zero Waste program is a nationwide road-show, by which HuMuSz with the contribution of its member associations will appear with an information table at 36 festivals, and will also give waste prevention advice personally. Part of forming the residents approach is a green household competition, by which we urge making residences more environmentally conscious. We communicate the practical tips that help this transformation trough the help of the media, thus creating a community whose goal is that members collect and share the good examples with each other and the public. The www.nullahulladek.hu website also serves the purpose of sharing information, on which we also offer advice to all interested parties. The topic of waste prevention will also appear in educational institutions, 360 schools in all, where we will reach thousands of primary school students through school activities and raffles.
A defining element of these initiations is the residential model program. Within its framework some pilot project municipality of varying size – such as Várpalota and Csór, can work out residential zero waste plans under the coordination of HuMuSz along with the city council, residents, public service organizations and local non-profits. The most important criterion of the zero waste plans is that contain elements which in foremost urge waste prevention, for example with a composting program, creation of reusing centers, methods which serve the sensible consumer approach etc.
In its lobbying activities HuMuSz views it a key task that it reach the approach should fully integrate in order to encourages waste prevention into domestic environmental protection guidelines, and fights so that the executive actions help to practically reduce waste. The organization participated in the development of the National Environmental Protection Program and the National Waste Management Plan, where it strives to lay ground for the basic principles within the Zero Waste Program. HuMuSz handles the question of the environmental protection product fee system and the refund with great emphasis, arguing that the former policy would be more effective, and emphasizing the indispensable role in waste prevention of the latter.
“During the preparation of the zero waste programs we were happy to experience that the number of those who are in agreement with us in this project is increasing. People start understanding that selective collection is not a solution, but an important part of the solution, beyond which we must deal with our consuming habits” - said László Szilágyi, president of HuMuSz. “Before anyone would think that for zero waste we have to abandon our current consumer and production systems, along with our current lifestyle, at once, we must realize that even now there are numerous similar initiations – reuse centers, the spread of organic farming, etc. -, which proves that we are on the road to zero waste” - emphasized Szilágyi. “We must assume that the transformation must be gradual, and results can be achieved through little things we do every day.” On Zero Waste day public figures (Péter Novák, Judit Endrei and Bea Palya) will play a role, as they also find HuMuSz's initiation important.
Some of the tips:
Whatever we can be repaired should rather be fixed instead of being discarded and replaced by new goods. Let's choose products with returnable packaging and if we can't do this( for example PET bottled mineral water) – let’s recycle that product’s packaging. A tote bag or a basket should always be handy, so that we should dump fewer plastic bags and packaging at home. Go to libraries, places that rent things, swap shops, and compost our organic waste. These are just a few examples, from which we can see that it’s neither complicated nor expensive to be environmentally conscious. A little attention is required, but we can get a cleaner and more livable environment in return, and can save money as well.
